See that date there on the wall, That’s a date that I know well. It’s way back when if I recall, The day that we first fell. (chorus) Was it love, or was it a fling, Was it just a one-time thing? I hoped to ask you when we’d meet, And tonight I passed you on the street. Tonight we met for the first time since our meeting, Our friends were there, and yes, our lovers, too. I looked to you, and did you ever get the feeling, There was no one else in the world but me and you? Hear that voice so soft and clear, It’s a voice that takes me there. That’s what I heard as you drew near, The sound of love we share.
2.
You come from a very nice town, Hills to climb, places to hide and soon to be found. I come from somewhere, but I won’t tell, And if you ask me, I’ll say well, Please don’t do that, we’re in a crowd. My heart fell, but I stood proud. The houses ’round here, the same as there, But back home, they don’t like my clothes and hair. That’s why I just say somewhere, But it’s all right, And I’ve never had this kind of night. So I let it fall, And I don’t know, About it all, I let it go, I let it go. You want to know where I am bound, Friends to make, chances to take before settling down. I might go somewhere, but not for long, And if you want me, I’ll stay on, Please just do that, we’re still so young. My heart fell, but I stood up.
3.
You’re the only somebody, I want to be somebody with. Now who’s had somebody, And not that least little bit, Will do? I see you and I must admit it’s true. (chorus) I just can’t help it, ’Though I know I should. If I could help it, Well, you know I would. And it’s plain as the name, Right there on my sleeve. Look behind the gold frame, There’s the man who did deceive, Himself, Only himself and no one else. But I just can’t help it, No, I can’t help it. You’re the only somebody, I want to be somebody with. Now who’s had somebody, And not that least little bit, Is free? I see you and I just feel like it’s me.
4.
Why do I stay in, why do I sleep late, Why do I dream, so sweet, that I hate to wake? Why do others walk on while I stand at the gate, If I’m still in love with you? Am I still in love with you? Why do I call out, why do I low moan, Why do I cry, dear lord, please take me home? Why do I feel like I’m in this world alone, If I’m still in love with you? Am I still in love with you? (refrain) If it’s true that it’s deep inside, Where the light of love shines bright, Then open me up, I’ve got nothing to hide, No blood, no heart, but the memory’s still alive. Why do I act strong, why do I fall down, Why do I smile, each time, when no one’s around? Why do your windows stare me into the ground, If I’m still in love with you? Am I still in love with you?
5.
You wonder why you’re hanging around, Well, if anybody was around they’d say, There’s no other way for love to be found, And nobody knows if you leave or stay, Will you find it by yourself? Will you meet somebody else? You’re wondering, And you’d be running, If you could. Lights that glimmer through the woods, And the cold at your country door. You say there’s somebody for. Everybody was out that night, And everybody had everything they ever dreamed of. You were right, oh, you were right, But love, Did you find it by yourself? Did you meet somebody else?

She Looks 03:30
Like what you read in that book of matches, Dial the number, day or night. Make the connection, but the catch is, She looks wrong, but she’s all right. (chorus) And she looks like she might be crying, I ain’t sure, but I’m buying, anyhow. And don’t I look like I might be trying, Look at me trying too hard right now. Like what you saw on a downtown billboard, Quit your habits, save your life. It takes reflection, for no reward, She looks free, but she’s his wife. And she looks like she’s going, Looks like she might be gone. Walk on down to that broken pay phone, Whoever you call, they’re not home. Like what you wrote in your book of deceits, Keep a straight face, take the shot. Try some deflection, and then say please, She looks game, but she’s so not.
7.
She’s a redhead, don’t you know it, Not some high-handed brunette. Done some living, she sure shows it, But if I gotta say it, boy, you just met, And you ain’t ready yet. (chorus) Well, she’s a lot more than a picture from the past, And you’d do well to remember. If you look long enough, you might make love last, But she’s moving, she ain’t no picture, She’s the center of attention. Now I know, she’s got your attention. She’s a gambler, watch her throw it, Got herself an unpaid debt. Done some leaving, she soon outgrows it, And if you gotta play it, son, you can bet, But you ain’t ready yet. There it is, front and side, When they want to take your portrait, you can’t hide, you can’t hide.

What’s it gonna take to prove my faith, And my fidelity? How will I break this hold that gives me an ache, Between my heart and my hostility? Tell it to the state patrol, Tell it to the guy you’re with in your hidey hole. I can try to sweeten up this bucket of coal, But I end up bitter down in my soul. (chorus) And I’m so close, I’m so close, Couldn’t be closer, we two. You’re so close, I’m so close, I feel lower than low when I say I’m so close to you. What’s it gonna take? What’s it gonna take? What’s it gonna make out of your deal, And your dependency? How do I fake these tears when they’re really real, Down the shirt of my despondency? Walk into the funeral home, Walk into the gift shop and find you're there all alone. You can laugh about it and never mind your tone, But you go back out that door you’ve been shown.

Left my wagon down in the weeds, Like she left me, and nobody knows where she’s gone. Cover it over, but the wound still bleeds, And the care it needs won’t be coming along. (chorus) It’s that old-time feeling of being left so lonely, And this old-time boy can’t see her ways. It’s that old-time feeling, she surely showed me, I’ll see you one of these old days, Yes, I’ll see you one of these days. Daddy said he don’t know his son, Like he told me, wipe the dirt off and go on home. Cover it over, but the hurt ain’t done, And the morning sun won’t be coming along. That old-time feeling, I just feel bitter inside. That old-time feeling, You all got to see I’m trying.
10.
Tell me about the things I need, Before I say, darling, I need you. I’m sure they’re the things to which I’d concede, But they’re not something that I need to do, Right away. Drop what I’m doing, stand in line, and pay. (pre-chorus) For medicine, salesmen, Got a real good deal on a mandolin. Play my violin for some government men, Well, they’re only going to hear me sing it again and again. (chorus) Heaven only knows how much I need her, Heaven’s just a step or two away. Heaven’s when I hold her, heaven’s when I show her, How close we are to heaven here today. Show me how wrong it is to need, Just when I say, honey, I need you. I’ll confess to the sin of greed, But that’s not something that I need to do, Right away. Stop what I’m doing, get in line, and pray. (second pre-chorus) For misers, mason jars, Bought myself a yard full of old used cars. Count my lucky stars from those county bars, Yes, you’re only going to hear me sing it for hours and hours.

about

Hank Williams: Great American Novelist. Every song he wrote contains multitudes -- people moving, people changing, everything happening too fast or too slow for his liking. Each successive line of "I Can't Help It (If I'm Still in Love with You)" opens up a world of grief and loss. How brave he was to have written and recorded it, way back in 1951. The honesty of it, the catch in the throat as she walks by. Chapter upon chapter. Hurt and regret. But maybe....

This is where we start. Can we walk around in that town for a little while, where it's always getting on dark and nobody's saying much? Will she dance with me? Could he help me forget? Is there somebody for everybody?

Dig up the lyrics to ol' Hank's "I Can't Help It." Then you'll understand.
